親愛なる日本フィルのお客様へ

少し前まで私たちは皆、きっとすぐに以前のように一緒にコンサートができるようになると期待し、私自身もまた日本に帰ってきてこの素晴らしい日本フィルと共演できると思っていました。しかしながら皆様もご存知の通り、状況は期待していたほど好転しておらず、世界中で警戒が高まり、外出や渡航などに様々な制限がかかっています。この規制により、私の11月の来日が叶わなくなってしまったことは残念でなりません。
全世界の人々が協力し合ってこのロックダウンや規制に耐え、ウイルスの制御に成功し、一日も早く喜びあふれる生活に戻り、再び生の音楽を一緒に創り上げることができるようになることを願うばかりです。日本フィルとの演奏を私はいつもとても楽しみにしています。これまで築き上げてきた互いに対する信頼と深い理解が、スコアを蘇らせるのです。
日本フィルへの変わらぬご支援に、心から感謝申し上げます。早く皆様とお会いできる日を願って。

To my dear friends, the audience of the JPO,

A little while ago we all had such high hopes that it would be possible to have concerts together again soon and I would be back in Japan performing with the fabulous Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. But as you all know, things have not turned out as we had hoped and we are now, all over the world, in heightened alert with lockdowns and travel restrictions of various sorts everywhere. I am so sorry that the rules make it impossible for me to be with you next month. I hope that as we all struggle with these lockdowns and restrictions, we collectively get this virus back under control so we can – hopefully soon - return to our joyous lives and make live music together again. I personally enjoy working with the JPO so much – we have developed a rapport and a depth of understanding which makes the score come alive for us all.
